Pulmonary embolisms & DVT negligence claims

In 2010, over 10,000 people died due to not being screened for blood clots or given the correct medication when they were admitted to hospital.

Deep Vein Thrombosis

Every year, one in every 1,000 people in the UK is affected by Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). DVT is a blood clot in one of the deep veins in the body, usually in the leg. It can cause pain, tenderness and swelling.

Surgery and some medical treatments can increase the risk of developing DVT and medical negligence claims arise from a failure to:

  • Diagnose a blood clot.
  • Take appropriate preventative measures or administer an anticoagulant (blood thinning drug).
  • Identify the risks of a blood clot once diagnosed.

Pulmonary Embolisms

If DVT is not treated, a pulmonary embolism (PE) may occur. A pulmonary embolism is when a blood clot moves in the bloodstream (usually from the leg) and blocks one of the blood vessels in the lungs.

Symptoms include:

  • Gradual or sudden breathlessness.
  • Chest pain.
  • Sudden collapse.

Both DVT and pulmonary embolisms are serious conditions. It is important to diagnose and treat them as early as possible.
