Compensation for woman who sustained burns to her body during hysterectomy surgery
A 46-year-old woman received £12k in compensation for a diathermy burn she sustained on her left thigh during an operation in October 2008.
On 30 October 2008, she underwent a hysterectomy operation at the defendant hospital. During the operation she suffered a diathermy burn on her left thigh, measuring 7cm by 3cm.
She was referred for further treatment at a burns clinic and was prescribed antibiotics. She was subsequently referred to the care of the district nurses, who regularly cleared the wound using aqueous solution. Microbiology showed only normal skin flora on the area.
It was estimated that the wound would heal within 18-24 months from the incident. Expert evidence was obtained which confirmed there would be no adverse scar reactions.
The hospital admitted negligence and the case was settled for £12k.
