Hospital misdiagnosed ectopic pregnancy - woman recovers £22,500 in compensation
Boyes Turner’s medical negligence lawyers recovered £22,500 in compensation for a 30 year old woman due to a misdiagnosis of an ectopic pregnancy.
Soon after she discovered she was pregnant, she begun to experience some abdominal pain and consequently attended the Defendant hospital. She was informed that she had an ectopic pregnancy.
Unnecessary operation
She was admitted to hospital and underwent an operation to remove the ectopic pregnancy in the left fallopian tube. No scans were done prior to the operation. Her left fallopian tube had to be removed during the operation. She was then advised that the foetus had been removed and that she was no longer pregnant.
One week after the operation, she was called back to the hospital because histology showed that she had not had an ectopic pregnancy after all. An ultrasound scan was performed and she was told that she was still pregnant. She had not suffered an ectopic pregnancy and so her fallopian tube had been unnecessarily removed, under general anaesthetic. In addition to this, she went on to suffer a psychological injury and was concerned for the health of her baby throughout the remainder of her pregnancy.
Advice from specialist medical negligence lawyers
She took advice from Boyes Turner’s medical negligence lawyers and a compensation claim was brought against the hospital for the misdiagnosis of an ectopic pregnancy causing the unnecessary removal of her left fallopian tube and a psychological injury.
Hospital admits negligence and compensation recovered
The hospital admitted that an ultrasound scan should have been performed prior to surgery and that if it had been, she would not have been operated on.
A settlement figure of £22,500 in compensation was negotiated by Boyes Turner’s specialist lawyers.
There was no cost to client in bringing this medical claim which was funded through a no win no fee agreement.
