Compensation after negligent surgery left woman with scarring and nerve damage
Negligent surgeon
Boyes Turner’s medical negligence lawyers recovered £50k in compensation for a 55 year old woman for a negligently performed arthroscopy on her left knee which caused damage to the peroneal nerve.
She suffered from osteoarthritis in her left knee and consequently underwent an arthroscopy to try to improve the condition. After the procedure, the doctor advised her that he also repaired a torn meniscus by placing a stitch at the back of her knee.
Following the operation she reported excruciating pain. The doctor assured her that this was normal and that he would examine her the following day. Unfortunately the pain was worsened and she found that she was unable to put her foot down on the floor.
Consequently, she was seen by the doctor who immediately removed the stitch from her knee. By this time damage had already been caused to her peroneal nerve. Due to this damage she suffered from drop foot and had to attend regular physiotherapy sessions. She also had another operation to stretch and clear the damaged nerve.
She contacted Boyes Turner’s medical negligence lawyers and a compensation claim was brought against the hospital for the negligently performed arthroscopy on her left knee which resulted in a scar, an additional surgical procedure and numbness in her left leg.
Expert evidence was obtained from a Consultant Orthopaedic surgeon who confirmed that some of the damage would be permanent. Even though liability was not admitted by the defendant hospital, a settlement figure of £50k was negotiated by Boyes Turner’s lawyers.
There was no cost to our client in bringing the claim.
