Failure to diagnose cholesteatoma - £5.5k compensation for 10 year old boy
Boyes Turner's medical negligence lawyers recovered £5.5k in compensation for a ten year old boy after hospital staff failed to diagnose a cholesteatoma in his right ear.
He had initially gone to a walk in centre with blood stained discharge in his right ear. The next day he was reviewed by a specialist consultant and was admitted for an urgent examination of the ears under local anaesthetic. The operation note recorded that the claimant did not have a cholesteatoma in the right ear.
He continued to suffer with blood stained discharge and visited both his GP and the hospital on a number of occasions for over a year and underwent many examinations. He was diagnosed with having a large polyp and had grommets inserted into his ears.
However 13 months after his first examination he was found to have a huge cholesteatoma behind the right tympanic membrane.
His mother took advice from Boyes Turner’s medical negligence lawyers and a compensation claim was brought against the hospital for the failure to diagnose the cholesteatoma, which had resulted in several surgical procedures, severe infections, bleeding from the ear and a foul smelling discharge. He also suffered reduced hearing, required a course of antibiotics and was very distressed as a result of the discharge.
Expert evidence was obtained from Consultant Otolaryngologist who reported that there had been an eight to nine month delay in diagnosis but that it had not affected our client’s long term prognosis.
Even though liability was not admitted by the defendant hospital, a settlement figure of £5.5k in compensation was negotiated by Boyes Turner’s lawyers.
There was no cost to our client in bringing the claim. Click here to read about how we have helped other people who have suffered medical negligence recover compensation.
