Compensation for family of woman who died following delayed cervical cancer diagnosis

Nicola was aged 30 when she was diagnosed with cervical cancer in October 2000. She had previously been investigated for abnormal smears in 1997/1998, but after that there were failings in the care provided by both her GP and her local Hospital which lead to a delay in the diagnosis and treatment of her cervical cancer.

Once diagnosed the cancer was inoperable and Nicola underwent chemo radiotherapy which resulted in radiation enteritis and loss of fertility.

The case was approaching a trial when Nicola suffered a recurrence of the cancer in 2005 and underwent further intensive chemotherapy.

The GP and Hospital admitted failings in the care that they had provided and the valuation of the medical claim was put on hold to see how Nicola responded to treatment.

Sadly Nicola died in August 2006. She left 2 children and following her death the case was settled on behalf of her estate and her dependant children.

Compensation received for medical claim: £265,000
